We spoke with Josh Lehman, Director at Digital Surge, and he told us a little about the company’s story and his thoughts on the industry.
“Our whole focus has been on helping increase the adoption of cryptocurrency. The majority of the feedback we get from people is that they don’t have the time or capacity to fully understand it. They often get overwhelmed with the complexity and need a simpler and easy way to purchase.”
Tell us a little about yourself?
I have worked professionally in the IT industry for the past 10 years providing IT support and consulting services to a range of small to medium businesses. In my previous role I was the lead security engineer responsible for developing and performing penetration tests against our clients and helping keep their networks safe. This has given me a good insight into what it takes to design and build a secure platform. In my down time I like to go rock climbing, mountaineering and canyoning.
Tell us about Digital Surge?
I was personally involved with Bitcoin back in 2011 mining them on my PC, mostly for the simple fact I could make money from my computer. I continued to be involved in the space on and off for 5 years, and it wasn’t until the start of 2016 I decided I wanted to build a cryptocurrency exchange. It was purely started as a passion project out of the love for technology. This evolved into a full time project and now we have a team of 5 that support the business with the mission of being the simplest and easiest platform to use within Australia.
How do you make Bitcoin easy?
Our whole focus has been on helping increase the adoption of cryptocurrency. The majority of the feedback we get from people is that they don’t have the time or capacity to fully understand it. They often get overwhelmed with the complexity and need a simpler and easy way to purchase. We have purposely designed our platform to be very simple and easy to use, we also have a live chat to help guide people throughout their journey. We recently had our first grandma at 77 years of age come through our site completed unassisted and pay one of her bills with bitcoin.
What technology do you use?
As I’m answering this question my security hat comes on and to not give away too much information! We’ve built Digital Surge’s platform from the ground up using a range of leading technologies and services including Google, Cloudflare, Intercom and Docker.
Our platform can also be interacted with via our comprehensive API, meaning that customers can create trading bots or interact with the site without having to use the web interface.
Thoughts on the cryptocurrency market?
Everyone wants another bull run and for the price to go back up. However, this pull back has given projects an opportunity to focus on continuing to build great products and shake out the ones that are not in it for the right reasons.
As to where the market is going, that is the million dollar question isn’t it? Long term I definitely believe it will pick up, simple economics would say that when the mining reward halves in 2020 that will increase the price as long as the demand stays the same.
3 tips to people looking to invest in Bitcoin?
Start small first so that you can get comfortable with how it works. You don’t need to purchase a whole Bitcoin, with our platform you can start with as little as $20.
Decide on your investment strategy and stick to it. It is very easy get carried away especially in the heat of the moment. Take your time to double check everything, especially when sending Bitcoin between wallets as everything is final and can’t be reversed.
3 companies you think are doing innovative things globally?
Intercom is definitely one of my top picks they are transforming the way business communicate with their customers at scale.
Binance – these guys have had an amazing success story moving to the number one crypto to crypto exchange in the world by trade volume in such a short period of time.
The third is not a company but a newsletter I subscribe to called Abundance Insider by Peter Diamandis, he talks a lot about the convergences of different technologies and the impact they will have.
Anything else you would like to add?
If your thinking about buying some bitcoin there is no time like the present 🙂
Thanks Josh! We love sharing innovative projects and companies that make all things easier – great work Digital Surge!
